CALS Tailgate

Dave Shew, Michael Cannon, Barbara Shew, Jim Kerns, Lucky Mehra, Rick Davis, and Lina Quesada represented Plant Pathology well at the annual CALS Tailgate event held on Sept. 6. Tailgate was held for the first time in PNC Arena and drew a record crowd of over 2,300 attendees. Visitors enjoyed looking a specimens through the microscope and playing the match-the-disease game presented in the Plant Pathology display.

2014 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the NCSU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Dr. Luis Felipe Arauz received the 2014 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the NCSU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on September 5.  In 1988, Felipe earned a Masters of Science in Plant Pathology and in 1990, a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology both from NC State University under the direction of Dr. Turner Sutton. Dr. Arauz returned to his native Costa Rica in 1990 as a Professor of Plant Pathology in the Department of Crop Science at the University of Costa Rica. In 1997-2005, he served as Director of the Department of Crop Science and from 2004-2009 Felipe was Director of the Institute for Agricultural Research at UCR. He was appointed Dean of the UCR College of Agriculture and Food Science in 2009 and held this position until 2014. In May 2014, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture for Costa Rica by the new President of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solis.
